Feeding the Fish's current show Flux in performance - juggling 5 clubsBeautiful patterns of light are traced through the air during the high-impact stage show as the balls and clubs change colour in perfect synchronisation with the upbeat musical soundtrack. The props are programmed precisely to create a fantastic variety of colourful shapes and laser beams as they are thrown and manipulated by the accomplished jugglers.

The performance is suitable for corporate events, festivals, product launches, private parties, galas and variety theatre as well as having been adapted for nightclubs.

Technology

Feeding the Fish Poi - developed in 2001

Have you ever seen a tangerine-coloured light trail with a deep red halo? Or electric-blue stripes projecting emerald-green beams? The visual effects created by Feeding the Fish’s electronics are completely unique, and alongside the juggling itself, the technology is pivotal to the performance.

FTF Full spectrum LED Glow ClubsFor the past 6 years, we have designed and built all our own technology. Currently the circuits inside our clubs boast an intelligent 6-channel colour mixing module and a sequencer accurate to the millisecond. We use the brightest Red/Green/Blue LEDs available to make beautifully rich and vibrant colours. The program running on the high-end microcontroller inside each club allows complex and visual patterns to be encoded.

The very first full spectrum sequenced props were our RGB poi which featured in the show 'Luminescence' back in 2002. They were stunning and quite unlike anything seen before. The natural progression was to design clubs that could create similar visual effects. This was a significant design challenge, but they were finally ready for New Year’s Eve 2004. And as the audience at Monaco’s Salle du Canton would testify, it was certainly worth the wait - they looked fantastic. These clubs were the most advanced electronic juggling equipment anywhere in the world - capable of producing over 16 million colours, they could be synchronised with each other and a musical soundtrack, and reprogrammed from a PC at any time for custom performances.

Laser light sticks

A year later, we launched our laser light sticks, now used in the choreographed club swinging routine in Flux. Visible over 3.6 kilometres away, these lasers are the brightest and most powerful that can be used safely and legally on stage. The pure green laser is controlled by the microchip inside the stick to create stripes and slices through the air above the audience. These effects are sequenced along with the colours and effects of the LEDs within the sticks themselves to synchronise exactly with the music.

Pixel poi creating rainbow light effects

2006 saw the development of the Pixel-Poi (patent pending). This was a quantum leap in LED performance technology - each ultra-bright emmiter in the array can be individually controlled to millisecond accuracy, allowing incredible graphics to be created through persistence of vision effects. The poi, created entirely by FTF can store endless amazing patterns encoded by complex algorithms on a PC, including logos and text - see custom performances. Simon is geekishly proud of the fact that each of these poi contains more computational power than the ZX Spectrum - his first home computer!

Driven by a heartfelt enthusiasm for seeing cutting edge technology create beautiful visual effects, we are constantly working on new projects and look forward to incorporating them into the performance.

The Emotions de Rue festival ended the week with an undeniable success...

At 21h30 as night started to fall, Alix and Simon, the two young English artistes of Feeding the Fish appeared on stage mixing juggling, technology and magic. Using illuminated clubs and balls, the two jugglers, who certainly don't lack originality or imagination, immediately transported the audience to their fantastic universe, full of poetry, for a highly colourful performance.

In the twilight of the town square, the living lights of the balls and clubs formed astonishing arabesques in the air. Each pattern quickly developing into the next. The two artistes (who were as readily dancers as acrobats) alternated between juggling solo, each using up to five clubs - or with four hands, displaying an incomparable dexterity. There was no dead moment in this perfectly executed performance that was set to an exciting musical soundtrack.

The finale showed them both juggling with one standing atop the shoulders of the other. A trick presented with such apparent ease that it was slightly disconcerting.

The two artistes couldn't fail to charm the public and the 20 minutes of this sparkling performance, full of fantasy, was in the general opinion, too short...

Once again, the surprise was indeed beautiful at the Emotions de Rue event! [Dany GROCKOWIAK]

Suedkurier (Germany)

One must go with the times. Juggling cannot stay the same. But to those who know it, it has always looked quite similar. Then along come the highly electronic and very modern "Feeding the Fish." The British act, formed in 1996, use brightly illuminated and programmable juggling balls and clubs in their show "Flux". Red, blue and green radiate, changing again and again as Simon Mylius and Alix Wilding spin the colours through the night air. Here is juggling performance without all the circus tradition. This concept works elegantly and coolly, alongside the futuristic electronic music.

Spinning quickly, the clubs become refractive lenses, and the balls like giant fireflies, flying through the air. Despite the many technical aids, the performance of "Feeding the Fish" is not cold... behind all the electronics, humans are at work.

Overall, whilst the duo themselves perform increasingly impressive tricks, the juggling does not come across as soulless: Perfect but poetic patterns - the performers throw the clubs to make a neverending firework display.

"Thank you very much for coming to perform 'Luminescence' on last Friday's Blue Peter, it looked fantastic and added a great deal to the live atmosphere." - Bev Josling, Ast. Producer, Blue Peter, BBC TV

"From the ridiculous to the sublime, Night Afore revellers were also treated to Luminescence, by London-based company Feeding the Fish. Three dancers clad in futuristic silver and black outfits juggle objects, which flash in time to an ambient techno soundtrack. The microchips in the clubs and balls are synchronised with the music, the effect is of everything coming together - the music changes, the lights all change colour and (the choreography) changes all at the same time... The props are unique."- The Scotsman

"Launched by the BBC's Adam Hart Davis and spectacular juggling duo Feeding the Fish, the Science on Saturday events were again a huge success"- University of Cambridge Newsletter

"An excellent performance. All our staff and guests from Germany thought you were wonderful... Thankyou for entertaining us so well" - Siemens UK and Germany

"Although Edinburgh has never suffered a juggling famine, I was impressed and absorbed by the jugglers of Feeding the Fish, who used light-emitting balls and clubs to create mesmerising patterns." - Sunday Herald

"Feeding the Fish... are brilliant club passers and they showed it again with 9, 10 and 11 club routines... fantastic absolutely great stuff with moving patterns, meta-patterns and great interchanges. Really top stuff." - Dr R. Stone. Organiser, British Juggling Convention

The Guardian listed Feeding the Fish as a highlight of the 1997 Glastonbury Festival.

"The entire audience went nuts over the premier of the gorgeous new programmable gloclubs from Aerotech being expertly handled by the people of Feeding the Fish. Everyone wants these props. Although the technology should not blind people from the brilliant performance & choreography inputted by the human element." - Daniel Colyer, twjc.co.uk

"Feeding the Fish however excelled with a tremendous top-quality club-passing number... building to screams of adulation at their twelve club finale... Many jugglers play with this phenomenon - few reach such heights of excellence..." - The Catch: British Magazine for Circus and Performance Arts. Iss. 23
